Decorating With Area Rugs
Area rugs are decorating staples. If you haven’t realized yet that area rugs can transform any room in a snap, it’s time to get out of your slumber and start looking around. Almost, if not all homes and offices have area rugs as a decor and floor covering. Why, even my public library’s receiving area has an area rug to welcome the booklovers.
Rugs are used both for decoration and for practical purposes. Before you buy there are a few guidelines that will ensure your satisfaction with your rug selection. These are merely suggestions intended to aid in your search for the perfect rugs; ultimately the selection is entirely up to your personal taste and needs.
Whatever type rug you are pondering, make sure that it will fit in the space where you intend to use it. Use a tape measure to measure the area, then measure the area that would be covered by the rug. Visualize what the rug would look like. Take various measurements until you are satisfied with the size of area you want your rug to cover. Taking measurements increases the chances of being happy with the first rug you buy.
Area rugs are indeed floor coverings, but what makes them different from carpets is that they don’t have to cover the entire floor. With an area rug, you don’t hide the flooring, you accentuate it. If you have a beautiful hardwood or interesting tiles, use an area rug to highlight it. Place the rug in high-traffic areas for protection.
Rug pads are heaven sent. Why so? Because they lessen the wear and tear of rugs from under. The front of the rug may look nice but because of constant stepping, underneath it can suffer. A rug pad can prevent this though. Furthermore, a rug pad prevents slipping and thus, accidents.
Utilize a rug pad to prevent slipping accidents particularly in the bathroom and on marble flooring. The pad also helps prolong the quality of the rug as it prevents easy wear and tear of the material.
Safety is important. You don’t want a rug to be causing friction with an electrical outlet. What a disaster that would be! Check the area that it doesn’t obstruct a door’s opening and floor vents. Again, the size matters.
Follow your instincts…except for the size factor. Go with your favorite color, pattern and material. Of course, color scheme and theme should be taken into account, but at the same time, the rug should suit your taste.
With so many selections available, you will surely find the perfect rug to delight you for years to come.
