Your Guide to The New Playable Goblins In Warcraft Cataclysm.

The Goblins awe coming! And if you’re an Alliance character, they are going to be right at you. Now, you might be wondering what will happen to your rep with the various Goblin factions? Especially if you are Alliance and you have discovered that the race will be allied with the Horde for the forthcoming Cataclysm expansion for Warcraft.

Well, don’t worry. The new playable Goblin race for Warcraft is a splinter group from the goblins we know and love. Booty Bay, Gadgetzan and elsewhere will still have your favourite taxi service and “Cut Me Own Throat Dibbler” style of Goblin Merchant.

So the reasoning behind this split is that a faction of Goblins has been made homeless by attacks from Deathwing (I knew he’d be back). They have been driven to the Lost Isles and into the waiting and welcoming hands of the Horde.

In keeping with the opening up of classes for all races, Goblins will start with a good selection of; Hunter, Mage, Priest, Rogue, Shaman, Warlock, and Warrior. The two most “spiritual” classes of Druid and Paladin are left out, and this seems like a good choice.

The Goblins though have been given a total rehaul. More detail, new animations, better textures, you name it. So although they will be recognisable as the Goblins we all know and love, they will be very much sharper in appearance.

As for racial abilities, the list reads;

Better Living Through Chemistry – A 15 point boost to alchemy. Continuing the form for 15 point rather than 5 point bonuses.

Pack Hobgoblin – Or, to put it another way. A bank in your backpack. The ability to call up the Bank and amazingly the Auction House GUI from anywhere. For wheeler-dealer types this will make a Goblin the gold trading class of choice. Though we do not know what conditions will be placed on this perk, it is most unusual and I’m really looking forward to seeing how this works.

Rocket Barrage – A local area attack. Starting with 30 points of damage in front of the Goblin. We don’t know if it generates threat yet, or what the cooldown is. This could be a very good tanking ability if the conditions are right

Rocket Jump – Jump straight into the enemy, a bit like the Warriors “charge” or “Intercept” ability. Again, this seems to lead to the idea of tanking.

Time is Money – 1% Attack speed bonus. This final, passive trait will add a 1% increase to casting speed and attack speed.

It’s hard to say with so little detail, but to my eye the new Goblin class in Warcraft Cataclysm lends itself to tanking and gold making. The detail is missing though. Cooldowns and threat profile need to be added to what we know so far to be sure of this.

Goblins look to be every bit as exciting as Worgen. Warcraft Cataclysm is shaping up to be a great expansion in principle. Watch this space for more news as it is released.
